Open .avi, .divx and .xvid files on Windows 10 and 11

Older AVI video files come from DivX, Xvid, Indeo and other codecs (1992 to 2012). Filixir opens them without the original program. AVI files with codecs Windows no longer ships: play them and save them as MP4.

How to open one

  1. Download Filixir. It's free for Windows 10 and 11 and installs without an administrator password.
  2. Double-click your .avi file, or right-click it and choose Open with › Filixir. You can also drag it onto Filixir.
  3. The first time, Filixir offers to download its free media add-on (the VLC engine) from its makers. It takes a minute and only happens once.
  4. Look through it in Filixir, then save it in the format you want. Your original file is never changed.
